Expanded Legal Sea Foods in Copley Place Re-Opens The newly expanded Legal Sea Foods restaurant located at Copley Place in Boston, Massachusetts, to re-opened Friday, September 2, 2005 at 4 p.m. The addition was designed by Fairbank Design., Boston, MA in association with Vision 3 Architects, Providence, RI, and was built by Shawmut Design and Construction, Boston, MA. When presented with an opportunity to enlarge the restaurant at Copley Place by 2,400 s.f., Legal Sea Foods decided to take the additional space, and at the same time perform minor renovations in the existing restaurant that had undergone a major renovation in 2000. To allow for construction, the restaurant closed for one month.
The restaurant is now approximately 9,600 s.f.;, and the number of seats has been increased by 80-85. A private dining room, wine tasting room, shucking station, take-out area and additional restrooms have been added. To ensure compatibility with the design of the existing restaurant, the same team that developed the original restaurant design was commissioned for the expansion. The challenge for the team was to create an environment where the new matched the atmosphere of the old. To achieve this, many of the same materials ceiling, carpet, tile, and wood accent materials were used. Signature design features included aluminum fabric kites and pastel sketches of salt marshes.
