On October 23rd, 2023, Legal Sea Foods in the Town Center of Virginia Beach, joined Hampton Roads in recognizing local culinary legend, Mr. Joseph “Joe” Hoggard. Family, friends, local icons, and restaurateurs came together as Legal Sea Foods dedicated their private dining room as the “Ship’s Cabin” in honor of Hoggard’s legendary restaurant.
“It’s a privilege to have been asked to honor those who have helped build our community and make it what it is,” Mayor Bobby Dyer said as he opened the dedication ceremony. “Iconic businesses are driven by the vision of iconic individuals who get things done.” Dyer went on to express what an honor it was to be recognizing Hoggard—an important member of the Hampton Roads community.
This dedication paid homage to Hoggard’s unparalleled contributions to Virginia’s dining scene including Ship’s Cabin, the first AAA 4-diamond restaurant in Southeastern Virginia. Legal Sea Foods is thrilled to continue his legacy as it is etched in the palates of many.
“This is much more than I expected. It’s beautiful,” Joe’s daughter, Tanya Hoggard, said before unveiling the new sign for the private dining area.
Guests enjoyed beverages and hors d’oeuvres, which included a special rendition of Hoggard’s legendary Oysters Bingo prepared by Legal Sea Foods president and COO, Matt King. “I thought it would be fun to try his recipe tonight,” King said. “I’ve heard a lot about Joe and his love for good food and good wine. I think we would’ve been great friends.”
“Ship’s Cabin” is a thoughtfully curated, private dining space that can accommodate up to 50 guests seated or 75 reception-style. It’s tucked away on the side of the restaurant. The intimate space can be closed off completely from the main dining room and offers guests floor-to-ceiling views of Virginia Beach’s Town Center on one side.
